Five Reasons to Specify Concealed Door Closers

4/7/2022 Hidden Gems: Five Reasons to Specify Concealed Door Closers concealed door closers door closer

Five reasons why Astra's jamb-mounted concealed door closers work so well with architects' specification design schemes.

We all know how overhead surface mounted closers work. Easy enough. But we also know about their drawbacks – unsightly, prone to tampering, sometimes unreliable. That’s why we are finding that architects across Ireland – and further afield - are changing their regular closer spec to a jamb-mounted concealed product like the Astra 4000 series.

Here’s five great reasons why they fit in so well with architects and designers’ design schemes.

Aesthetics: quite simply concealed closers look better – in fact, they are not visible at all when the door is closed: particularly important consideration in residential settings where an overhead closer can lend a rather institutional air to a home.

Anti-Vandalism: because they are concealed in the door leaf, they are less likely to be damaged, vandalised or stolen so are more likely to give years of trouble-free operation than their overhead counterparts. With metal prices rocketing thefts of metal components are on the rise. The fact that concealed closers are hidden from sight, more compact, and more difficult to dismantle is no small consideration.

Reliability: Most door closers are all tested to half a million cycles on specially designed test rigs. At Astra we are so confident in the reliability that we offer a lengthy guarantee. In terms of maintenance, concealed closers require little or no maintenance. In fact, because they are concealed in the door leaf, they are less likely to be damaged, vandalised or stolen so are more likely to give years of trouble-free operation than their overhead counterparts.

Cost: Of course, the issue of cost can’t be ignored. A quality concealed closer is extremely competitive against its European-manufactured overhead equivalent.

Compliant: Our concealed closers are a perfect choice for fire doors. Along with pivots or hinges, and a latch/lock, closers they are items which are deemed “essential” to hold the door in the frame in the event of a fire. Concealed closers can be fitted on 30- and 60-minute fire rated doors but the closer should be CE marked (where applicable) and it goes without saying that they must conform to the fire test evidence for the door they are fitted on.
